about burnie
Burnie is a small city located on the Northwest coast of Tasmania with a population of approximately 20000. It has a cool temperate climate, clean air and water, fresh produce and a strong paper-making heritage.
It was once was the industrial heavy weight of Tasmania, mass-producing Paper for world markets. The paper mill started in 1937 and by the mid 60's it employed over 3500 people. In the early 1990's this changed when the pulp radically downsized to employing only 200 people, under pressure from environmental issues and changing world markets. Burnie has cleaned up its environment, had a face-lift and under gone a cultural renaissance in that time.
Part of this renaissance has been the continued and valued community development of Creative Paper Tasmania. The business has sought to keep Burnie's paper making heritage alive by exploring and developing the realm of making paper by hand. It primarily operates as a visitor attraction offering hands on paper making tours, a gallery, studio space and a retail outlet for local art work and Creative Paper's own products.
Burnie is also known for producing some of the world's best cheeses, as well as a unique single malt whiskey and we also enjoy a selection of great wine and fresh seafood produced and caught locally.
